Located in the heart of Manhattan’s vibrant NoMad District, this 10-story Beaux-Arts hotel—originally designed by architect Frederick C. Bowne in 1905 and landmarked in 2013—has operated continuously for over 110 years. The property presented a rare opportunity to restore a piece of New York City history while enhancing its functionality for contemporary hospitality.
Crown led the project team through a comprehensive gut renovation, transforming 88 guest rooms, restoring the landmarked façade, replacing all windows, and introducing a newly designed lobby and restaurant. The project also included major infrastructure upgrades and modernization of the building’s vertical transportation systems.
As Executive Architect, Crown provided expert oversight in navigating complex code compliance issues, developing a strategic approach to secure approvals from both the Department of Buildings and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The team successfully balanced preservation requirements with operational needs by maintaining key non-compliant, grandfathered conditions essential to the building’s continued use.
From construction documentation through construction administration, Crown guided the project at every stage, collaborating closely with Asfour Guzy Architects to ensure a seamless integration of historic character and modern design.
