Originally home to the children of legendary puppeteer Jim Henson—where his wife, Jane, once served as an assistant art teacher—the Mead School has been a pillar of creative education in Fairfield County since the 1960s. With a long-standing legacy of nurturing generations of students, the school is now undergoing a transformative renovation to align its facilities with a forward-thinking curriculum.
Crown was first engaged to conduct a comprehensive zoning study, evaluating the maximum allowable buildable area on the site and surveying the existing structures to produce detailed as-built drawings. With a clear vision and a strategic approach, Crown provided the Mead School’s Board of Directors with renderings, layouts, and technical documentation essential to their capital campaign—ultimately helping secure the funding needed to move the project forward.
The new façade of the school’s central building has been completed, marking the first phase of the campus transformation. The next phase involves the demolition of an unused annex to make way for a flagship facility that will include an assembly space, admissions office, and robotics lab—serving as a symbol of the school’s commitment to honoring its heritage while embracing innovation in education.
In addition to new construction, the master plan includes significant accessibility upgrades across the campus, ensuring full ADA compliance. Nearly half of the 13-acre site will also be regraded and landscaped to accommodate new bus lanes, parent drop-off zones, and expanded parking—dramatically improving circulation and functionality throughout the campus.
